Litter Trap “Ribbon Cutting”

May 19, 2024 @ 10:30 am 11:15 am

The Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership and the Borough of Dunellen welcome you to join us to celebrate the installation of a new “Litter Trap” pollution reduction device on Sunday May 19, 10:30 am.

We will meet at the end of Jefferson Ave in Green Brook to demonstrate the benefits and functions of this first of a kind device in New Jersey!

The Green Brook begins in the Watchung Mountains and flows into the Raritan River east of Bound Brook. The Green Brook is home to eels, egrets, herons, fish and other wildlife. It is prone to serious flooding from heavy rainfall during all times of the year, which washes trash and other debris into the waterway.

The Litter Trap device, designed by Stormwater Systems, is a floating cage anchored by two booms which direct floating trash into the cage where it is captured to be removed at regular intervals by municipal staff. The Green Brook Litter Trap device is designed to simplify removal of litter from the waterway, minimizing DPW and volunteer efforts to keep our streams clean, and helping to improve water quality, environmental habitat, and human drinking water supplies.

This project was selected for implementation as part of the Cornell-Dubilier Electronics Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) Restoration Plan. Project partners include Dunellen, Green Brook, the Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership, and the Cornell Dubilier Trustees (New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, US Fish and Wildlife Service and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration).
