June 7 – It’s all about Milkweed! Pollinator talk with Rutgers Entomologist

June 7, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Rutgers entomologist John Cambridge, Ph.D. will give a special presentation on milkweed to the LRWP and Highland Park Chapter of the New Jersey Native Plant Society on Tuesday, June 7 at 7:30 pm.

Dr. Cambridge will provide an introduction to milkweed as a native North American plant and then move on to how this set of species is important to the monarch butterfly. Discussion will include the monarch population decline and end on what people can do themselves to help this species and how that relates to milkweed. Dr. Cambridge will bring live milkweed and monarchs for participants to view.

We will meet at the Eugene Young Environmental Center located at 20 River Road in Highland Park. http://npsnj.org/pages/events_05_may.html#highlandpark

Dr. Cambridge’s talk will prepare our groups for a joint milkweed growing and planting program in Winter/Spring 2017. The LRWP and the Highland Parch Chapter – NJNPS will host a seeding day early in the year, asking volunteers to adopt plants to nurture throughout the winter months. The goal is to have several dozen plants readied for a group planting event in the Finderne Floodplain next Spring.
