DESCRIPTION:On Sunday June 22\, join LRWP Water Quality Outreach Coordinator Dr. Johnny Meyer to learn about rain garden installation\, and to assist with replanting of the rain garden at our sculptural #FRAME in New Brunswick’s Boyd Park Raritan River riverfront. \nNew Brunswick’s Boyd Park floodplain suffers repeat flood inundation\, and serves as a protective “sponge” for other parts of New Brunswick. The #lookfortheriver: FRAME sculpture tells the story of infrastructure that is at-risk of flood inundation due to climate change and sea level rise. The sculpture is a living symbol of how removal of structures (in this case a house) from our floodplains allows for ecological restoration and regeneration\, and fosters resilience.

PLEASE NOTE: there is a steep scramble down an embankment from the Lowes parking lot to the Utility Right Of Way in the New Brunswick Conservation Zone  \nWHAT:  Birders of all skill levels are welcome! The walk will be guided by Birding Enthusiast Jordan Parham (more about Jordan below) \nJordan writes: “Mid-March isn’t a great time for warblers\, but it’s still good for wintering birds\, waterfowl and birds of prey. There are peregrine falcons that nest under the Route 9 bridge\, and Cooper’s Hawks\, mergansers\, fox sparrows\, juncos\, and brown creepers when I scoped the site last weekend.” \nTo our experienced birder friends: we will start by covering birding basics\, however we welcome you to join us to share your expertise and help guide discovery and understanding! \nOur birding guide Jordan Parham is Conservation Police Officer · NJ Department of Environmental Protection. This year the FEMA YPC for Region II (New York\, New Jersey\, Puerto Rico\, U.S Virgin Islands) is working on three unique projects promoting preparedness in our region. \nOn Tuesday May 17\, from 7-8pm the LRWP will host special guests from FEMA Region II’s Youth Preparedness Council for an online conversation about youth involvement in emergency preparedness and planning. In this hour long presentation our guests\, all high school students from within the Raritan Basin\, will share information on three new projects developed through their work on FEMA’s Youth Council. \nThese projects include: \n-“Mitigation for Youth Guide\,” focusing on the prevention of injury and illness from a wide variety of natural disasters \n-Social Media Outreach/Awareness Campaign \n-“Ready Youth In-A-Box” Preparedness Program that promotes overall preparedness through clubs in schools and youth-oriented environments \nPre-registration required for sign-in information.

DESCRIPTION:With thanks to Sustainable Highland Park and New Jersey Americorps Watershed Ambassador Ginny Rockey\, the Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership is pleased to host a “Build a Rain Barrel Workshop” in Highland Park on Sunday May 1\, 1-2:30PM.\n\nSpace is limited\, pre-registration required. We require a $50 donation to the LRWP for materials costs. The rain barrel you create will be yours to take home!\n\n\nThis “Build A Rain Barrel Workshop\,” part of Highland Park’s Earth Day Festival\, will take place outside in the parking lot behind Provident Bank between Raritan Avenue and Denison Street on the North side of highland Park at North 3rd Avenue (Provident Bank’s street front is 301 Raritan Avenue). Due to the Earth Day Festival and Highland Park Street Fair\, please note that the special traffic patterns for the hours of 10 am to 4:30 pm in downtown Highland Park: Denison Street is open to traffic both ways all day. (Raritan Avenue is NOT open to traffic due to the Festivals).  You will find us on Denison Ave and N. 3rd if you are coming by car.\n\n\nRain Barrels contribute to green stormwater management\, and are part of Highland Park’s Green Stormwater Management plan.\n\n“Why Rain Barrels?\n\n\nTake an active role in recycling rainwater – install a rain barrel at your house!  A rain barrel is placed under a gutter’s downspout next to a house to collect rainwater from the roof.  The rain barrel holds about 50 gallons of water which can be used to water gardens and for other uses.  Harvesting rainwater has many benefits including saving water\, saving money on your bill\, and preventing basement flooding.  By collecting rainwater\, homeowners are also helping to reduce flooding and pollution in local waterways.  When rainwater runs off of hard surfaces like rooftops\, driveways\, roadways\, parking lots\, and compacted lawns\, it carries with it pollution to our local waterways.  Harvesting the rainwater in a rain barrel is just one of the ways homeowners can reduce rainwater from running off their property and possibly causing pollution and flooding problems in local waterways.”

These MS4 permits authorize stormwater discharges to surface and ground water for both Tier A (urban) and Tier B (rural) municipalities provided they implement Statewide Basic Requirements (SBRs). These permits are meant to help address stormwater quality issues for new developments\, redevelopments\, and existing developments. The last update to the MS4 General Permits was in 2018 and they will be up for review in 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us Sunday October 3\, 2-4 pm for our second “walk in the watershed” in South Bound Brook/Bound Brook with LRWP Board Member and Rutgers Professor David Tulloch! We also expect Green Brook Flood Control Commission Chair Raymond Murray to join us for part of our tour.\n\nPlan to meet at D&R Canal Lock 11 in South Bound Brook. There is limited parking in this lot\, however there is plenty of street parking.\n\nWe will start our conversation at D&R Canal Lock 11\, explore a bit of the canal and talk about its function and its relationship with the health of the river. From there we will walk over to Bound Brook to see the flood control gates by the traffic circle and the levees at Billian Legion Park. We will continue our walk up the Lincoln Ave Bridge to take in views of the Raritan.

DESCRIPTION:Our Summer 2021 Raritan monitoring team welcomes volunteer pathogens monitors to join us in the field for weekly field assessments and sampling. We absolutely cannot do this work without our *trained* volunteers!!\n\nDue to COVID\, this Summer we have a limited number of volunteer slots every week (four maximum).\n\n\nWe meet Thursday mornings between 7:45-8am at our first sampling site\, Riverside Park in Piscataway. \n\nThe address for our first site is: 430 River Rd\, Piscataway\, NJ 08854.\nAdditional site location information can be found here.\n\n\n\n\nWe typically wrap up monitoring at our last site in Perth Amboy by 1 PM\, and then continue on to drop off the samples at the IEC lab in Brooklyn. This year we especially welcome assistance from volunteers willing to drive our samples to the lab in Brooklyn!\n\n\n\n\nWe have waders in various sizes\, so no need to bring your own. HOWEVER – be sure you have shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy/wet.\n\nYou will want to bring water/fluids to stay hydrated throughout the day. \n\n\nIf we are doing well time-wise we will stop for pizza (or similar) for lunch. SUMMARY:Sept 26: Stream Clean-up in Highland Park!
DESCRIPTION:The LRWP\, the Borough of Highland Park\, and Middlesex County Division of Parks are co-hosting a clean-up on Sunday September 26\, 10am-1pm! \nHurricane Ida washed a fair amount of trash into our floodplains. Refuse also remains on local trails and stream banks. This is an opportunity to come together to clean up the mess! \nHIGHLAND PARK PARKING: 51 River Road\, Highland Park NJ\, parking lot passed the Educational Center (additional parking on Harrison\, Cleveland and Wayside). \nGloves and bags will be provided.  PLEASE WEAR RUBBER BOOTS AND CLOTHES YOU DON’T MIND GETTING DIRTY. \nWith thanks to our partners: Sustainable Highland Park\, Highland Park Environmental Commission\, Highland Park Ecology and Environment Group and the Reformed Church of Highland Park. \n

DESCRIPTION:Our Sept 24 boat trip on the R/V Rutgers is canceled due to mechanical difficulties. With apologies from our Captain\, who writes: “Yesterday the R/V Rutgers lost propulsion on its port motor. Some preliminary checks have indicated that it is not an easy repair. I am working diligently to get this fixed\, but pandemic-related supply chain issues are not making it any easier…We’re currently unable to locate a lower unit in the United States. The nature of your planned trip and time constraints would not allow for operation on one engine.” \nWe are hopeful we will be able to reschedule this fall. If not this fall\, then we’ll see you in the Spring. \nWith thanks for your interest in the Lower Raritan\, and for your understanding. \nLower Raritan Watershed Partnership and Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County.

SUMMARY:August 14 Raritan Dams Tour with John Jengo!
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Saturday\, August 14th for a three hour tour of the Headgates\, Robert Street and Nevius Street dams. This tour will be led by the very wonderful and informative hydrogeologist John Jengo\, PG\, LRSP. The tour will include discussion of past and future dam removals\, and will be a chance to see the scale of the dams so that downstream removals can be understood in context. \nWe will kick things off promptly at 8:30 am at Headgates Dam\, followed by the Robert Street and Nevius Street dams. We estimate the trip will be approximately 3 hours. We will be walking along the river banks to see these sites\, so plan on wearing appropriate footwear. For those interested\, we can also visit the Weston Mill Dam site at the end of the day\, which can be viewed from the Weston Causeway Bridge. \nThe LRWP is grateful to John Jengo for offering this opportunity. Registration is limited to 18 people. Directions and parking information will be sent to registrants in advance of the event. \nFor more information on these dams\, and dam removal in the Lower Raritan and Raritan Basin\, please see John Jengo’s blog series on the LRWP website. Please also see the LRWP’s letter to NJDEP regarding the importance of the Headgates Dam Removal. \nABOUT JOHN W. JENGO\, PG\, LSRP: John is a licensed Professional Geologist in several Northeastern and Southeastern states and a Licensed Site Remediation Professional in New Jersey. John works as a Principal Hydrogeologist in an environmental consulting firm in southeastern Pennsylvania. He has degrees in geology from Rutgers University (1980) and the University of Delaware (1982). Over the last 30 years\, he has conducted the characterization and remediation of large\, complex contaminated industrial sites throughout New Jersey\, Pennsylvania\, and Delaware. He played a key role in Natural Resource Damage (NRD) assessments that led to groundbreaking legal settlements to remove numerous low head dams on the Raritan and Millstone Rivers to restore historically significant migratory fish spawning runs. As technical project manager\, he planned\, permitted\, and successfully managed the removal of the Calco Dam\, the Robert Street Dam\, and the Nevius Street Dam between 2008-2013\, and the removal of the Weston Mill Dam on the Millstone River in 2017\, along with leading the archaeological investigation of the former Weston Mill in the Borough of Manville and Franklin Township.

DESCRIPTION:Our Summer 2021 Raritan monitoring team welcomes volunteer pathogens monitors to join us in the field for weekly field assessments and sampling. We absolutely cannot do this work without our *trained* volunteers!!\n\nDue to COVID\, this Summer we have a limited number of volunteer slots every week (four maximum).\n\n\nWe meet Thursday mornings between 7:45-8am at our first sampling site\, Riverside Park in Piscataway. \n\nThe address for our first site is: 430 River Rd\, Piscataway\, NJ 08854.\nAdditional site location information can be found here.\n\n\n\n\nWe typically wrap up monitoring at our last site in Perth Amboy by 1 PM\, and then continue on to drop off the samples at the IEC lab in Brooklyn. This year we especially welcome assistance from volunteers willing to drive our samples to the lab in Brooklyn!\n\n\n\n\nWe have waders in various sizes\, so no need to bring your own. HOWEVER – be sure you have shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy/wet.\n\nYou will want to bring water/fluids to stay hydrated throughout the day. \n\n\nIf we are doing well time-wise we will stop for pizza (or similar) for lunch. SUMMARY:July 24 Watchung Mountain "Hidden Streams" Hike
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the LRWP’s first “Watershed Highlights and Hidden Streams” walking tour of 2021! \nJoin us on Saturday July 24\, 10-noon as we visit one of the northernmost areas of the Lower Raritan Watershed and explore the Watchung Reservation’s Blue Brook and Lake Surprise. \nThe walk\, guided by our own David Tulloch\, will help our hikers begin to discover this massive Olmsted Brothers-designed park. With help from a few maps\, Dr. Tulloch will talk about the context of the park within the watershed as well as the context of this culturally-significant historic landscape within the surrounding communities of Union County. \nWe will be meeting in the Watchung Reservation at the area called The Loop (Some park signs point towards the Loop and its playground). At 10am our group will depart on foot from the building (with bathrooms) shown with the red marker below (40.687\, -74.374). \n \nEstimated 4 miles of walking. \nRegistration required. Please check the LRWP website for updates\, especially in the case of inclement weather. \nThe Watchung Reservation is in Scotch Plains\, NJ 07076
