Streams\, rivers and other water bodies make up the watershed where we all live. Watersheds are areas of land where runoff from rain and snow drains into a lake\, stream\, river or wetland. These watersheds are full of life. They provide habitat for fish\, birds and wildlife. They are also a source of drinking water for homes and businesses. The Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership and the Franklin Township Environmental Commission share a joint mission to keep water clean\, safe and healthy through conservation\, advocacy\, science and education.

SUMMARY:March 29 Riparian Stewardship Strategies for Municipalities: a tour of Highland Park's "The Meadows" and Raritan River Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join the LRWP and our hosts the Highland Park Environmental Commission for a two hour walking exploration of “The Meadows” – an 18-acre recovering urban forest along the Raritan River in Highland Park that demonstrates how former degraded land can become an ecological treasure! \n\n\n\nWe will learn how this conservation-zoned site became listed on the NJ DEP Open Space List\, where a former municipal landfill (closed 1970) has evolved into thriving habitat. The tour explores trails built and maintained by the Environmental Commission since 2007. Walk the 0.6-mile upper loop trail above the floodplain\, featuring six benches for wildlife observation\, and the 0.1-mile lower loop providing direct Raritan River access. See the recently upgraded infrastructure funded by an Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC)/Licensed Site Remediation Professionals (LSRP) Foundation grant: a replacement boardwalk in the upper meadows and a new second observation deck overlooking the eastern meadow area. \n\n\n\nDiscover the site’s ecological richness: over 30 tree species\, diverse wildlife including deer\, fox\, groundhogs\, and numerous bird species. The Meadows serves as a critical migration stopping point\, with shore birds\, egrets\, cormorants\, ospreys\, and eagles frequently spotted spring through fall. Learn why this site is an ecological treasure – similar urban forest recovery sites are rare. \n\n\n\nUnderstand the maintenance model: how a dedicated 10-member Meadows Trail Crew of nearby residents works under Environmental Commission jurisdiction to sustain this popular destination visited by 50-75 people daily year-round. This is an ideal experience for anyone who wants to learn how Environmental Commissions can shepherd long-term urban habitat recovery and build volunteer stewardship programs\, or create unique recreational opportunities using municipal resources. \n\n\n\nThis tour is Part II of a two-part inquiry into “The Meadows.” Part I\, to be held via zoom on Thursday March 26\, will be a talk by local photographer David Smith. David is Rutgers Assistant Teaching Professor in Landscape Architecture and Coordinator of the Environmental Geomatics Certificate. Special attention will be paid to the ecozones/ecotones of the birds and critters in “The Meadows.” \n\n\n\nLimited to 20. Pre-registration required.

SUMMARY:March 29 - Counting Eels at the Green Brook!
DESCRIPTION:Did you miss the chance to squEEEAL while we looked for eels during Spring 2025? \n\n\n\nWant to learn more about our search for juvenile glass eels in the Green Brook during eel migratory season 2026? \n\n\n\nCome help us look for\, and count\, eels at the LRWP’s Green Brook “eel mop” (artificial habitat)\, and learn why we are so excited about these migratory superstars. \n\n\n\nPlease wear footwear and clothing that can get wet and or muddy. If you have waders\, bring them along! \n\n\n\nWith thanks to the NY/NJ Harbor & Estuary for funding to support this project. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRunning from March-May 2026 the LRWP will monitor for Migratory “Spring Glass Eels” in the Green Brook. This civic science eel monitoring project will augment an on-going litter reduction project\, including installation of a Litter “Trash Trap” device\, along the waterway between Dunellen and Middlesex. More information about the project here.

SUMMARY:March 26 Celebrating the Wildlife in our Local (Highland Park) Landscapes - Zoom lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Lower Raritan Watershed lies in the heart of the I95 Corridor between Boston and Washington\, the most densely populated region of its size in the US. With all this density and development\, it’s no surprise that to many who live in the area the idea of wildlife seems distant and alien. Wildlife belongs to wild places\, and the Lower Raritan Watershed seems anything but that. But if you look closely\, and listen\, you’ll find a surprisingly rich diversity of animal life in our own urban landscape. In this presentation David Smith\, Rutgers Assistant Teaching Professor and Coordinator of the Environmental Geomatics Certificate will share some of his experiences observing and photographing wildlife in the area and discuss how those observations connect with specific components of our very familiar local landscapes. Special attention will be paid to “The Meadows” of Highland Park\, nestled along the Raritan River\, with discussion of the birds\, critters\, and adorable squirrels specific to the ecozones/ecotones of their habitation. \n\n\n\nThis Zoom lecture will is the first part of a two part series focused on The Meadows. Part II\, a walking tour of The Meadows hosted by the Highland Park Environmental Commission is scheduled for 1-3pm on March 29. Separate registration required for each event. \n\n\n\nRegistrants will receive zoom log-in details the day before the talk.

SUMMARY:Lessons from Historical Streams: "Down the Brook" at Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage
DESCRIPTION:Historic preservation is underway “Down the Brook” at Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites for Revolution NJ\, the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in New Jersey and New Jersey’s first Constitution! \n\n\n\nFor this workshop the LRWP will join Paul Soltis\, New Jersey State Park Service’s historian for Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites in Somerville\, George Washington’s winter headquarters during the Revolutionary War’s 1778-79 Middlebrook Cantonment and historic home of the founder and first president of Rutgers. \n\n\n\nWe will learn about the significance of Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage to New Jersey and the American Revolution\, explore the work taking place under the scaffolding as preservation architects and contractors reintroduce traditional techniques and sustainable materials to the historic structures\, and contribute your own comments to inform the State of New Jersey and Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association’s Revitalization of Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites as a legacy of Revolution NJ. \n\n\n\nThe National Park Service has awarded N.J. DEP $200\,000 for a cultural landscape report including a feasibility study for daylighting a portion of this buried waterway: https://dep.nj.gov/newsrel/25_0052/ \n\n\n\nGiven overlapping interests between the State Park and the Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership\, discussion will extend the presentation on the rehabilitation of the historic houses with a walk of the grounds examining the buried waterway at Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage and considering potential environmental and historical benefits of including stream daylighting and green infrastructure as part of the historic landscape rehabilitation of these State Historic Sites in a neighborhood defined as an overburdened community according to New Jersey environmental justice law. \n\n\n\nParking is available at 71 Somerset Street\, Somerville\, NJ 08876.
