SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch & Learn\, Lessons from Historical Streams of the Lower Raritan Watershed: a GIS approach.
DESCRIPTION:On a rainy day\, you can walk through downtown New Brunswick and hear the remnants of a historic stream trickling through storm drains. This historic waterway is the Lyell’s Brook– a small side-stream of the Raritan River that was buried as a century of urban development transformed the landscape of New Brunswick. \n\n\n\nJoin the LRWP and our special project intern Gavin Wagner for a virtual “Lunch & Learn” on Friday March 24 during which Gavin will present on his undergraduate project\, “Finding Historical Streams of the Lower Raritan Watershed.” This project examines how and why streams like the Lyell’s Brook changed over time. Gavin writes: “Historical maps are my lens\, and GIS technology is my focus. With them\, I dissect centuries of change throughout the dynamic watershed. This narrative presentation will cover my methods\, their greater purpose\, and the lessons I learned along the way.” \n\n\n\nPre-register to receive log-in information.

SUMMARY:2023 Book Club: "Serviceberry" by Robin Wall Kimmerer
DESCRIPTION:The LRWP will host a series of book club readings and events in 2023. Our first reading will ground us in purpose and meaning: we will start with Robin Wall Kimmerer’s long essay called “The Serviceberry”. \n\n\n\nIn the Lower Raritan\, the Serviceberry (Amelanchier)\, also known as the Shadbush (and many other names) blossoms at the time of the shad run in the Raritan River. We will read this piece in anticipation of its blooms\, and in anticipation of the return of shad in the Raritan. Kimmerer’s writing is wonderful ethnobotany\, and provides important thinking about the roots\, meaning\, and purpose of gifts and exchange. If we read and listen closely it might just offer insights into how to transform our societies. \n\n\n\nWe are so excited with the opportunity to come together as a watershed community around this article\, and around the ideas of nature’s – and our – expressions of service and gift giving. \n\n\n\nThe initial book club session will be hosted virtually via webex. Pre-registration required.

SUMMARY:April 15 Earth Day Clean-up of Mile Run Brook (New Brunswick & Franklin Twp.)

Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church / 285 Hamilton St\, Somerset\, NJ 08873 \n\n\n\nSPECIAL NOTE: Please wear closed toe shoes and clothes you are willing to get dirty. Bring a reusable water bottle. Gloves\, bags and light refreshments will be provided! \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION REQUIRED. \n\n\n\n***For more information contact Watershed Ambassador Michelle Hatfield at wma9.njwap@gmail.com*** \n\n\n\nYou may wonder why it is so important to keep our waterways clean. Streams\, rivers and other waterbodies make up the watershed where we all live. Watersheds are areas of land where runoff from rain and snow drains into a lake\, stream\, river or wetland. These watersheds are full of life. They provide habitat for fish\, birds and wildlife. They are also a source of drinking water for homes and businesses. The Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership and The Watershed Institute share a joint mission to keep water clean\, safe and healthy through conservation\, advocacy\, science and education.
