SUMMARY:Jan 29 - Walk in the Watershed with Professor David Tulloch
DESCRIPTION:Please plan to join us for our second “Walk in the Watershed” of 2023 with Rutgers Professor David Tulloch. Our winter walk with Dr. Tulloch will explore different sources of runoff into the Macs Brook. Wedged between highways\, parking lots and commercial developments\, the relatively inaccessible Macs Brook connects this massively built landscape (wedged alongside the Bridgewater Mall) with the waters of the Raritan River. We are going to look at the Macs Brook\, storm sewers and the impervious surfaces that drain into the brook. We also hope to see some large retention and detention structures. \n\n\n\nThe walk will require walking some distances\, but all of it on hard surfaces. In fact\, we will try to stick to sidewalks and avoid asphalt as much as we possibly can. \n\n\n\nPre-registration required. We will meet in the southern part of the Macy’s parking lot (400 Commons Way / Bridgewater\, NJ)\, along the grand sidewalk:

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch & Learn\, Lessons from Historical Streams of the Lower Raritan Watershed: a GIS approach.
DESCRIPTION:On a rainy day\, you can walk through downtown New Brunswick and hear the remnants of a historic stream trickling through storm drains. This historic waterway is the Lyell’s Brook– a small side-stream of the Raritan River that was buried as a century of urban development transformed the landscape of New Brunswick. \n\n\n\nJoin the LRWP and our special project intern Gavin Wagner for a virtual “Lunch & Learn” on Friday March 24 during which Gavin will present on his undergraduate project\, “Finding Historical Streams of the Lower Raritan Watershed.” This project examines how and why streams like the Lyell’s Brook changed over time. Gavin writes: “Historical maps are my lens\, and GIS technology is my focus. With them\, I dissect centuries of change throughout the dynamic watershed. This narrative presentation will cover my methods\, their greater purpose\, and the lessons I learned along the way.” \n\n\n\nPre-register to receive log-in information.

DESCRIPTION:The LRWP requires that all boat build participants join us for an hour long safety and boat shop orientation prior to registering for our ongoing boat building/woodworking sessions. Our safety orientations are held once a month from 8-9am on the last Saturday. \n\n\n\nIntro/safety session participants are welcome to remain at the boat shop after the safety training to participate in our regular Saturday build session. And of course\, upon completing the training\, participants are welcome to join our other boat build sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the month! \n\n\n\nThe intro to the boat shop/safety overview is an “in person” event to be held at 101 Raritan Avenue in Highland Park. \n\n\n\nRegistration is FREE. \n\n\n\nClose toed shoes are required when in the boat house. Close-toed shoes required. Please wear appropriate clothing for wet and dirty activities. Pizza lunch and snacks provided.
