SUMMARY:June 11 Pathogens Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Our Summer 2026 Raritan monitoring team welcomes IEC-trained volunteer pathogens monitors to join us in the field for weekly field assessments and sampling. We absolutely cannot do this work without our *trained* volunteers!! \n\n\n\nWe have a limited number of volunteer slots every week (four maximum). In addition to data collection and other monitoring activities\, volunteers help us beautify our monitoring sites by picking up trash. We leave these non-bathing public access beaches cleaner than we find them! \n\n\n\nWe meet Thursday mornings between 7:45-8am at our first sampling site\, Riverside Park in Piscataway. The address for our first site is: 430 River Rd\, Piscataway\, NJ 08854. Additional site location information can be found here. We typically wrap up monitoring at our last site in Perth Amboy by 11 AM\, and often need volunteers to drop off samples with our Interstate Environmental Commission partners (meeting up at a mutually convenient location in New Jersey\, occasional trips to their Brooklyn lab) and our Rutgers Fahrenfeld lab partners in Piscataway. \n\n\n\nWe have waders in various sizes\, so no need to bring your own. HOWEVER – be sure you have shoes that you don’t mind getting wet/muddy and clothing appropriate for the weather. You will want to bring water/fluids to stay hydrated throughout the day\, and snacks for fuel. \n\n\n\nYou will need sunscreen\, long sleeves/pants for sun protection\, and a hat. \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering with the LRWP!

SUMMARY:May 18 Pathogens Monitoring Training
DESCRIPTION:Calling all Raritan River birders\, paddlers\, fisherfolk and those who love the Raritan River! \nNEEDED!! Volunteers available to join us Thursday mornings (7-11am) in Summer 2026 to collect water samples from the Raritan River to test for presence of fecal contamination and disease-causing bacteria \nWHAT: In-person training Workshop for Water Quality Sampling and Bacteria Monitoring\, conducted by the LRWP and the Interstate Environmental Commission \nWHERE: EARTH Center of Middlesex County\, 42 Riva Avenue / North Brunswick\, NJ (continue past the gate/sign labeled “authorized vehicles only” to the EARTH Center offices) \nWHY: Every Thursday from May through the end of September the Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership and Rutgers Extension / Middlesex County EARTH Center take water samples from public access (non-bathing\, fishing\, and recreational) sites along our Raritan River to document bacterial contamination. New for 2026 we are augmenting our research with intermittent additional weekly sampling at four upstream sites – described on our blog here. \nThis training is required for all pathogens monitor volunteers. It is provided by the Environmental Protection Agency\, and ensures that our volunteers maintain quality assurance protocols as they help us with this important work! \nHaving completed this training volunteers will be able to sign-up to help with sample collection\, sample preparation and delivery\, analysis of findings and science communication. Please note: volunteers are NOT committing to weekly volunteering\, however this training is required for any field work for this project. \nSpace is limited and registration required.
