SUMMARY:From Land to Water: Water health in time of climate change\, Teacher Professional Development with the LRWP
DESCRIPTION:What we do on land does not stay on land. The choices we make on what we do on our property can impact the waters nearby as rain and runoff pick-up and move pollutants from their point of origin to our waterways. In a time of climate change when precipitation is highly variable these pollutants are more likely to affect our local and regional water quality. Join us for a tour of New Brunswick infrastructure and landscape and a boat trip on the Raritan River to learn more about how we monitor water quality in general and pathogen monitoring more specifically\, and about solutions to divert the pollutants from our waterways. This full-day workshop will be followed up with a webinar (August 14th\, 4PM EDT) to explore instructional resources related to the Lower Raritan watershed\, and water quality monitoring. \n\n\n\nThe LRWP is pleased to offer this workshop in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Education. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to register see the Climate Change Learning Collaborative website.

SUMMARY:June 22 Rain Garden (re)Planting in Boyd Park
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday June 22\, join LRWP Water Quality Outreach Coordinator Dr. Johnny Meyer to learn about rain garden installation\, and to assist with replanting of the rain garden at our sculptural #FRAME in New Brunswick’s Boyd Park Raritan River riverfront. \nNew Brunswick’s Boyd Park floodplain suffers repeat flood inundation\, and serves as a protective “sponge” for other parts of New Brunswick. The #lookfortheriver: FRAME sculpture tells the story of infrastructure that is at-risk of flood inundation due to climate change and sea level rise. The sculpture is a living symbol of how removal of structures (in this case a house) from our floodplains allows for ecological restoration and regeneration\, and fosters resilience.

SUMMARY:June 17 Pathogens Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Our Summer 2025 Raritan monitoring team welcomes IEC-trained volunteer pathogens monitors to join us in the field for weekly field assessments and sampling. We absolutely cannot do this work without our *trained* volunteers!! \n\n\n\nWe have a limited number of volunteer slots every week (four maximum). In addition to data collection and other monitoring activities\, volunteers help us beautify our monitoring sites and we leave them cleaner than we find them! \n\n\n\nWe meet Thursday mornings between 7:45-8am at our first sampling site\, Riverside Park in Piscataway. The address for our first site is: 430 River Rd\, Piscataway\, NJ 08854. Additional site location information can be found here. We typically wrap up monitoring at our last site in Perth Amboy by 11 AM\, and often need volunteers to drop off samples with our Interstate Environmental Commission partners (meeting up at a mutually convenient location in New Jersey\, occasional trips to their Brooklyn lab) and our Rutgers Fahrenfeld lab partners in Piscataway. \n\n\n\nWe have waders in various sizes\, so no need to bring your own. HOWEVER – be sure you have shoes that you don’t mind getting wet/muddy and clothing appropriate for the weather. You will want to bring water/fluids to stay hydrated throughout the day\, and snacks for fuel. \n\n\n\nYou will need sunscreen\, long sleeves/pants for sun protection\, and a hat. \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering with the LRWP!

SUMMARY:May 22 Pathogens Monitoring

SUMMARY:May 10: Counting Eels at the Green Brook\, and Litter Trap clean-out demo
DESCRIPTION:Did you miss the chance to squEEEAL at the eel found in the “artificial eel habitat” during the Spring 2024 eel monitoring? \n\n\n\nWant to learn more about our search for juvenile glass eels in the Green Brook during eel migratory season 2025? \n\n\n\nJoin the LRWP and New Jersey Americorps Watershed Ambassadors on Saturday May 10\, 1pm for eel monitoring and to learn why we are so excited about these migratory superstars. \n\n\n\nWorking with our Dunellen DPW partners we will also provide a demonstration of clean-out of New Jersey’s first Bandalong Bandit “Litter Trap”. The Litter Trap project was selected for implementation as part of the Cornell-Dubilier Electronics Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) Restoration Plan. The Cornell-Dubilier NRDAR Plan is an example of how the nation’s strong Superfund Laws truly hold polluters accountable for environmental damages in our communities. A project seven years in the making\, the LRWP appreciates the hard work and dedication of our project partners: Central Jersey Stream Team\, the Boroughs of Dunellen and Green Brook\, and the Cornell-Dubilier Superfund Site Trustees including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. \n\n\n\nPlease wear footwear and clothing that can get wet and or muddy. If you have waders\, bring them along! \n\n\n\nWith thanks to the NY/NJ Harbor & Estuary for funding to support the eel monitoring project. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRunning from March-May 2025 the LRWP will monitor for Migratory “Spring Glass Eels” in the Green Brook. This civic science eel monitoring project will augment an on-going litter reduction project\, including installation of a Litter “Trash Trap” device\, along the waterway between Dunellen and Middlesex. More information about the project here.

SUMMARY:April 12 Earth Day Clean-up of Mile Run Brook (New Brunswick & Franklin Twp.)
DESCRIPTION:Since its inception in 1970\, Earth Day has brought millions of people together to celebrate our world’s environment. The day has also focused our attention on environmental problems such as pollution\, flooding and littering. \n\n\n\nPlease plan to join the Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership\, Franklin Township Environmental Commission\, the New Brunswick Environmental Commission\, Friends of Mile Run Brook\, New Jersey Americorps Watershed Ambassadors and others for an Earth Day clean-up of Mile Run Brook! \n\n\n\nWHERE: Mile Run Brook at the border of New Brunswick & Franklin Township \n\n\n\nPARKING: Sts. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church / 285 Hamilton St\, Somerset\, NJ 08873 \n\n\n\nSPECIAL NOTE: Please wear closed toe shoes and clothes you are willing to get dirty. Bring a reusable water bottle. Gloves\, bags and light refreshments will be provided! \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION REQUIRED. \n\n\n\n***For more information contact Watershed Ambassador Brianna Casario at wma9.njwap@gmail.com*** \n\n\n\nYou may wonder why it is so important to keep our waterways clean. Streams\, rivers and other waterbodies make up the watershed where we all live. Watersheds are areas of land where runoff from rain and snow drains into a lake\, stream\, river or wetland. These watersheds are full of life. They provide habitat for fish\, birds and wildlife. They are also a source of drinking water for homes and businesses. Join us for this special Earth Day clean-up to keep water clean\, safe and healthy through conservation\, advocacy\, science and education!
