SUMMARY:October 25 - Walk in the Watershed\, Perth Amboy
DESCRIPTION:With thanks to the Arts Institute of Middlesex County (AIMC) and the Board of County Commissioners\, the LRWP is hosting a series of Walks & Talks over the next few months\, highlighting the “disappeared” hydrologic heritage of five diverse central New Jersey communities in the Lower Raritan Watershed. \n\n\n\nPlease join us Saturday morning October 25\, 10am-Noon pm for our first hidden streams tour – a “walk in the watershed” in Perth Amboy with LRWP Board Member and Rutgers Professor David Tulloch. This will be a chance to see a series of challenges that this historic urban landscape poses for the watershed. And\, we will see the mouth of the Raritan River!  \n\n\n\nThe walk will start at the beach in Sadowski Parkway Waterfront Park at MAdison Avenue and Sadowski Parkway (Parking available on the street). We will look at urban open space\, a massive source of stormwater runoff\, a major contaminated site\, the only combined sewer overflows in the Lower Raritan watershed and an impressively historic walkable community.

SUMMARY:October 17 - tour of MCUA Wastewater Treatment Plant
DESCRIPTION:With appreciation to the Middlesex County Utilities Authority (MCUA)\, the LRWP is invited to a tour of the MCUA Wastewater Treatment Plant in Sayreville on Friday\, October 17\, 1-3pm. The tour is designed to support public understanding of how Middlesex County deals with waste in its wastewater division. Wastewater treatment is a process that removes and eliminates contaminants from wastewater and converts it into an effluent that can be returned to the water cycle through a primary outfall in the Raritan River. The MCUA facility in Sayreville treats the flow of sanitary sewage wastewater from over 900\,000 Middlesex\, Somerset\, and Union County residents. Space is limited\, pre-registration required.

SUMMARY:October 2 Pathogens Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Our Summer 2025 Raritan monitoring team welcomes IEC-trained volunteer pathogens monitors to join us in the field for weekly field assessments and sampling. We absolutely cannot do this work without our *trained* volunteers!! \n\n\n\nWe have a limited number of volunteer slots every week (four maximum). In addition to data collection and other monitoring activities\, volunteers help us beautify our monitoring sites and we leave them cleaner than we find them! \n\n\n\nWe meet Thursday mornings between 7:45-8am at our first sampling site\, Riverside Park in Piscataway. The address for our first site is: 430 River Rd\, Piscataway\, NJ 08854. Additional site location information can be found here. We typically wrap up monitoring at our last site in Perth Amboy by 11 AM\, and often need volunteers to drop off samples with our Interstate Environmental Commission partners (meeting up at a mutually convenient location in New Jersey\, occasional trips to their Brooklyn lab) and our Rutgers Fahrenfeld lab partners in Piscataway. \n\n\n\nWe have waders in various sizes\, so no need to bring your own. HOWEVER – be sure you have shoes that you don’t mind getting wet/muddy and clothing appropriate for the weather. You will want to bring water/fluids to stay hydrated throughout the day\, and snacks for fuel. \n\n\n\nYou will need sunscreen\, long sleeves/pants for sun protection\, and a hat. \n\n\n\nThank you for volunteering with the LRWP!

SUMMARY:Sept 29 - Tour of Bayshore Recycling
DESCRIPTION:Join us Monday September 29\, 9am to noon\, for a tour of Bayshore Recycling and follow the recycling journey with your own eyes\, observing how what’s left at the end of your driveway is sorted\, prepped and packaged to get it ready for the next phase of reuse. SUMMARY:September 18 Pathogens Monitoring
